about

"The new Distant Fingers album release titled ‘Good plastic’ takes an experimental, rockier approach than previous releases, drawing inspiration from Thee Oh Sees and spider bites. ‘Lockdown again’ sets the tone, reflecting upon the seemingly everlasting pandemic through opening with a vibrant strumming guitar – capturing a sense of here we go again. The track ‘Keep My Sad Story’ slowly descends into psychedelic delirium. Chaotic chills. A spiralling evident on the psychedelic album cover. Following this, ‘VMP’ stands out as a strong, heavy, and haunting track with a force in knowing where it’s going (Unlike the government). The longest track on the album, ‘Vindicate Me, Please’ hits again with a flowing vibrancy and is reminiscent of the Brisbane band ‘Nice biscuit’ , falling into ‘garage’ and ‘psych’ genres. Let’s ride out this wave. But where are we going? ‘Here Is Just Like That Other Place’ (+ reprise) brings the album together. It’s a nice hazy place to drift in between the surfing guitars, pounding beats and eerie waves of sounds throughout other tracks. A softer track, to possibly settle the urgency. ‘Good plastic’ feels like going under and coming back up from some gnarly waves, ending with a shivering that lingers on the track ‘CTR’. Clocking in at just 52 mins, the album is a must have for waiting in line for a PCR test." - Emily Hansell (www.instagram.com/emilyjhansell/)

Earlier tonight I thought I'd make a playlist of all the things I'd recorded this year (2021)*. It only had 11 tracks on it. So then I thought, 'Maybe it would be fun to make an album of everything I recorded in one year.' So I listened to all the tracks and I made this album. I also had an unfinished thing so I finished it off tonight in the middle of uploading and it became the 12th track.

All these pieces are 'first drafts' - I mixed them down just once (except 'Here Is Just Like That Other Place' and 'Vindicate Me Please', which I had two goes at. I think the guitar and bass parts are probably first-and-only takes but I can't really remember. You might be able to tell that I've listened to heaps of Thee Oh Sees this year.

I just left them in the order that I first added them to iTunes:

1. January 16, 10:15am
2. January 16, 2:16pm
3. January 30, 1:58pm
4. February 27, 8:56am
5. March 21, 10:23am
6. May 22, 9:59pm
7. August 2, 6:21pm
8. August 23, 7:46pm
9. September 1, 7:39pm
10. September 11, 7:17pm
11. November 22, 5:50pm
12. December 2, 11:00pm

'SP1' = 'Synth Piece 1', so named because I got my old Roland JP8000 repaired last year and, when I first got it back, I recorded the synth stuff that I later used on this track.

'Bushey Spon' is from the title of a Goon Show episode I listened to on August 23.

I think a family member got bitten by a spider on September 1.

I've forgotten what 'CTR' stands for.
