'The Universal Spider' was a lot of work. It started with some organ stuff six or seven years ago, which I liked but slowly whittled down to the bit at the very beginning. It took a couple more years to work it into something complete. It marks the end of a phase in my music-making that's been really enjoyable and significant for me. I'd been making pieces of music for years that I liked but didn't have the confidence or vision to pull them together into anything substantial. This changed when, inspired by Thom Yorke and Jon Hopkins, I started 'remixing' my own pieces into 40-minute albums (Organised Forgetting, Disposable Futures and OFDF). 'The Universal Spider' was the last time I tried to do this - I only got halfway through before I decided I wanted to take a different tack (Digital Self). I still like this track, though.

'Now That You Feel/In An Electric Light' is like the opposite of 'The Universal Spider' in that it came together incredibly quickly. I started by trying to copy the rhythm of Lambchop's 'In Care of 8675309' and then I just put a couple of other things over the top of it and had the basis of the song. It didn't take too much more work to finish it off.
